This late-period Span House, designed by Eric Lyons, sits on the Blackheath estate in England. Though modern and roomy, it no longer provided enough space for the recently-expanded family who occupied it. However, any alterations were to be carefully overseen by the estate's advisors to ensure that the unity of the original classic house design was not negatively affected. No visible extensions would have been permitted, yet the family did not want to leave their beloved home; an innovative solution was needed.

Together with the clients, a decision was made by Ape Architecture and Design to locate an additional bedroom and adjoining study within the existing roof space. The external structure was not effected, except for the addition of three discreet skylights to the roof on the rear elevation. Let's take a look at this marvelous feat- especially given the constraints Ape Architecture had to work with!

From the outside

Within a single envelope – encased in brick and capped with an eaveless shingle roof – three separate dwellings find residence. There is strong repetition and unity between the dwellings that the estate's advisors sought to ensure was not interrupted. The entry doors assume the exact same form and materiality, as do the lower and upper level windows – three carbon copies of each other.

The stairs to the top

The staircase leading up to the new addition in the roof space takes a very traditional form. A slight spiral acts to encroach on as little space as possible. An interesting detail is incorporated at the junction of the additional floor and the stair – instead of filling the gap in, balustrade pilasters have been employed to create a sense of openness. A study space in the roof

A bookcase finds a home on the wall above the staircase and the desk has been slotted in to look down over the stair well. Space has been used in an innovative and effective manner.

Strip lighting is located along both junctions where the sloping ceiling meets the horizontal insert – this attention to detail shows an incredible finesse. Everything about this study space is carefully considered and thoughtful.

The bedroom

Another space for books is located along the low knee-wall and the skylights overhead allow ample light into the room. The wonderful wardrobe is yet another example of the beautifully detailed design.

The timber face accents the framing of the skylights and the wooden chair. Elsewhere the white walls and surfaces bounce the natural light around the space. For more bedroom ideas, take a look here!

Inconspicuous skylights

A final shot showcased the skylights that have been seamlessly incorporated into the roofscape. They emulate the same materials and proportions found in the existing windows – making them feel entirely at place and unobtrusive.
