Weather you’re celebrating a holiday, hosting a dinner party or cooking up a feast for extended family, your luxurious dining room is the place you bring people together to enjoy delicious food and good company.

More often than not, it’s the room you use when formality and a sense of occasion is needed. But it is also a place where you want guests to feel comfortable sitting for a time and lingering over a meal. This should be a place that creates the kind of atmosphere that invites the spark of spontaneous human connection and relaxation, for nothing makes a dinner party sparkle like good humour and conversation.

No matter if your taste is rustic, traditional or sleek and minimalist, the key is to add a little more drama and luxury to the furnishings and layout. So how can you make your dining room do all this and still be impressive?

Include a generous dining table

A dining table, large or small is the grand stage for your feasts and should create a mood of comfortable abundance.

The table should be large enough to contain the various feature dishes and dinnerware needed for multiple courses. But it shouldn't be so large that guests can't easily talk to each other, push out their chairs or reach to the center of the table. A good measurement is to give each guest about 2 feet of eating space.

If you are short of room, go big on the table and use smaller chairs that can be pushed under the table when not in use. Options such as narrow, extendable tables are great and round tables can work well in smaller rooms as long as guests can still reach to the center of the table.

Dress up the décor

Sumptuous fabrics and finely detailed ornamentation create an elegant and sophisticated decor to any luxurious dining room. Rich chocolate colours or golden hues are the norm. But this doesn't mean they have to be old-fashioned or heavy.

For a major wow-factor, look at this design by Interior Desires. See how they have teamed modern hues with traditional detailing. The traditional wall panels and tie-back draperies add formality while the fabric colours in flamboyant modern hues of pink, gold and green create a blazing fresh atmosphere.

Fantastic furniture sets are ideal

Sinking back into your chair after a lovely meal is one of life's great pleasures, so why deny your guests the luxury of a wide seat and good support. Padded chairs like the ones used here in this interior by Lider Interiores give a sense of comfort and elegance. In general, just approach the purchase of a chair by asking yourself how long you could comfortable sit in it without needing to stand.

For aesthetic appeal, the most important part of a chair is the back, because that's the first part we see. The chair should also be in a pleasing proportion to the table and not be too small nor overwhelm it. Arm-rests can be problematic because the chairs can't be pushed under the table and they often hinder arm movement.

For high drama use a tall, high-backed chair. For plush luxury, use plump cushioned chairs. Low maintenance removable seat covers can be great for a seasonal change of style and to remove pesky food stains because there's nothing less impressive than other people's food stains!

Design with a fireplace

Dining rooms often contain a large table and perhaps some wall decorations. In contrast to other parts of the house they contain relatively few objects and run the danger of being a little sterile once the food has been cleared away.

A fireplace is a lovely opportunity to add a magical and comfortable ambience to any dining room. Even in the warmer weather of South-East Asia, a fireplace or similar feature with a bank of candles can create the kind of intimate ambience that is perfect for relaxed conversation. Not only that, a feature like this will create a natural focal point for guests to congregate around before or after a meal.

Light it all up

Dedicated lighting is a must for a great dining room. The latest trend is to have a large, low-hanging light feature hovering over the table. This also works very well in an open-plan space to help create a distinctive zone for the dining area.

Chandeliers have also made a recent comeback and create a sense of old-time elegance. They can be teamed with modern, minimalist furniture for a fresh approach.

Don't be afraid to use a bold lighting feature. Multiple lights hanging at various heights have also become popular as seen in this bulbous feature by Claudia Albertini & Chris Silveira Arquitetos

While the table and chairs are often limited by the functional needs of the home, the dining lighting feature has become bigger and more expressive or even eccentric. Find something distinctive to show off your distinctive style.

Accessorise glamorously

Impress with the accessories. With modern interiors becoming brighter and more minimalist, accessories can add verve and easy glamour to your table.

Oversized candelabras made of natural wood grain or white enamel are a cheap and easy way to add sophistication. Ornate mirrors can reflect a gorgeous chandelier and let's not forget the table settings. Table napkins, tablecloths and polished cutlery can be used to add finesse to any table. To finish off the look, use some embellished glasses to add sparkle to the night.
