Who doesn’t love the idea of a beautiful conservatory offering heaps of space for relaxing, socialising, storage space, or even to double as an extra room (like a home office or gym)? But like everything else, proper planning is crucial to get your conservatory as perfect as can be.

And, as always, homify is here to assist in any way possible…

1. Your conservatory: Ventilation

Your dream conservatory will become a nightmare should you skip on a well-designed ventilation system. That rising hot air needs to be released via roof vents, but also windows to help establish a cooler atmosphere and avoid nasty condensation.

2. Your conservatory: The space

Do you even have enough room on your property to include a conservatory? Even an awkward landscape (i.e. sloping) can be transformed with the right type of extension – and, perhaps more important, the right professional (i.e. Architect) on your team.

3. Your conservatory: The direction

Depending on the location and facing direction of your house, different materials, finishes, and types of styles will become more suitable. Be sure to consider the pros and cons of each material (i.e. the rising sun causing a blinding glare on those metal-frame doors) before making your choice.

4. Your conservatory: Planning Permission

To avoid wasting time and money, seek a design/construction company that will assess your conservatory design and –location against relevant planning policies and guidelines. In addition, if permission is required, check that those professionals can submit the appropriate documents (including your conservatory’s floor plan) to your local authority.

5. Your conservatory: Deadlines and disruptions

The right professional will be able to provide you with a clear timeline regarding the construction of your dream conservatory. But also consider how this project will affect your current household. For example, will it be necessary to seek alternative accommodation for the duration of the building project?

6. Your conservatory: One with nature

The aim of many conservatories and sunrooms is to blur the lines between interiors and exteriors. And of course the inclusion of plants and flowers can earn you some bonus style points.

But should you not possess the gift of green fingers, rather invest in floral-themed fabrics and botanical prints to still bring about that Mother Nature vibe.

7. Your conservatory: The furniture

Before you add so much as a scatter cushion, first determine how you plan on using your conservatory. Will it be for social occasions, in which case you may want to consider individual seats grouped in a circular pattern? Will dining and drinking be taking place there as well, in which case a dining table is appropriate?

8. Your conservatory: Protection

Aside from locking your conservatory to keep your possessions safe, consider how the elements might affect your new sunroom. For instance, if lots of sun exposure is to be expected, go with resilient fabrics that won’t damage or discolour too easily.

Of course you can always play around with different window treatments (blinds versus drapes) to not only see what fits the design style the most, but also protects your furnishings and décor.

9. Designing a conservatory for a period-style home

The design style of your house definitely helps to dictate that of your adjoining sunroom. Should you live in a period property, including complementary timber windows and ornate designs will ensure a consistent look. Also keep this in mind when scoping out décor and furnishings (a charming wooden side table versus a slim, stainless steel design, for example).

10. Designing a conservatory for a modern home

With a modern home, you have more flexibility with the look of your conservatory. Consider how a design flaunting glass, concrete and metals compares against one featuring more wood and lush fabrics.

And never overlook the potential that a glass extension can have on both your new conservatory and property value.
