Does your apartment have a signature style?

Most people dream big when imagining their dream apartment. However, making these fantasy abodes a reality is often a lot more challenging than it seems. Instead of creating a coherent, balanced space, styles get mixed and mashed together as walls are hastily painted and furniture is bought haphazardly to fill the space. Pretty soon, the vision of this dream home has disappeared from sight.

Let us help you get back on track! Here is a breakdown of the top ten most fashionable interior design styles, with a few handy hints on how to achieve them. Simple, budget friendly, and quick, these ideas will have your apartment looking amazing in no time at all.

The fashion leader – Scandi style

The trend for Scandinavian interiors exploded in popularity a few years back, and shows no signs of going away thanks to the proliferation of pristine Swedish style home pictures on Pinterest. Luckily, this a trend that everyone can replicate in even the smallest apartments.

Scandinavian style is characterised by a minimal appearance, neutral or white tones, and simple, well-designed furniture made of wood, plastic, and metal. Textiles are luxe; thick shaggy carpets, butter-soft leather and sumptuous blankets. Good lighting is also a must – Scandi homes are always light, bright and airy.

Cool and minimal

When most of us imagine minimal interiors, we think brilliant white, clutter-free surfaces, and an absence of, well, life. Many interior designers show off their skills by paring down their designs to only the most modern, aesthetically pleasing essentials, but it is still possible to create a minimal environment in your apartment without sacrificing home comforts.

A lot of the clutter will have to go, of course, so invest in large, simple storage solutions. Instead of opting for all-white, try playing around with shades of light neutrals – cream, taupe and beige can all create a minimal atmosphere without looking too clinical – and recessed lighting options to create interest.

Look to the past with vintage style

Some of the most interesting home designs eschew the modern and reach back in time for inspiration! However, rather than going for all-out chintzy 50's style, the new vintage home retains a clean, contemporary base and accessorises with vintage furniture.

White walls and reclaimed wooden flooring provides the perfect setting, allowing oriental rugs, mid-century commodes and striking antique dining tables to take centre stage. We can't think of a better way to inject a hefty dose of personality into the home.

Wooden and rustic

Hearkening back to old country farmhouses, the rustic trend is one that will probably always be relevant. Cosy without being cluttered or dated, this look relies on raw wood, exposed stone, and plush upholstery to create a welcoming home atmosphere.

The great thing about rustic wooden interiors is that there are so many sub-styles to choose from. Scandinavian style sofas, contemporary modern coffee tables and vintage chairs can sit together in harmony, so long as they stick to the same wood family.

Bold colours and accents

Everyone loves a feature wall, and for good reason! It's an easy, fuss-free way to jazz up a rented apartment or house without creating permanent changes.

A feature wall also allows inhabitants to introduce colour and personality into their home, without resorting to drastic changes like painting the entire room or buying new furniture.

Stacked and organised

Living in an apartment is great, but it can sometimes be a bit of a struggle when it comes to finding enough space for all your stuff. As a result, space-saving storage solutions have ceased to be purely functional, and have developed into a design feature in their own right, like these ones by Loaf.

Elegantly organised shelves, hanging racks for clothes, and innovative storage units are more readily available than ever, helping apartment dwellers to save space without having to sacrifice their design vision.

Monochrome mastery

Strong, 60's-esque monochrome is a brave style statement to make, but believe it or not it works in the majority of apartments. Choosing to go for black and white accents or full-on monochrome wall paint is merely a question of personal taste.

Any apartment can benefit from a blast of B&W. Even small spaces look great when white walls are broken up by dark panels. If that's a little too bold, geometric monochrome rugs, accent tables, and cushions are currently all the rage.

Plain but patterned

When in doubt, a simple apartment can be given a new lease of life just through the introduction of patterns. Achieving this is a breeze – simply hang some curtains, match them to your pillows and cushions, and combine them with some fun wall art in similar colour tones.

Want to take it one step further? Use vinyl tiles or tile decals to revamp the apartment floor.

Two rooms in one

When in doubt, loft it! Apartments with high ceilings can be split into two levels, which helps to maximise space while also adding an extra dimension of interest and intrigue to the space.

Depending on the height of the room, this new mezzanine level could house a separate, more private living space, a kids play area, or even a boho-style bedroom. It's the perfect solution for a space-strapped apartment, and can be achieved easily on a relatively small budget, too.

A cosy cafe environment

Most of us spend so much time in cute cafes these days, so it's only natural that we want to bring the best elements of these well-designed spaces into our homes.

Perfect for kitchens and dining areas, cafe style involves taking inspiration from the cool, kooky spaces we frequent with friends, and transferring that to our own homes. Raw wood tables and chairs, sleek breakfast bars with interesting stools, and stylish crockery are essentials. To complete the look, seek out geometric or vintage prints, minimal modern ceiling lamps, and – of course – an espresso machine. Bellissimo!
