Keeping a clean home can seem like a daunting task, and nothing is ever wrong with having a home that feels lived in. Particularly where children and family gatherings are involved, it can seem nearly impossible to keep a spectacularly clean home.

What you will find is that, if you keep up on the smaller tasks, the overall feel of your home can seem clean and organized with minimal effort.  We have plenty of great ideabooks for spring cleaning sessions and great storage and organization techniques – but what about those small, simple steps you can take to guarantee a cleaner home?

From forcing yourself to fold blankets and throws when you're done using them, to purchasing or DIY-ing a great closet storage system, we have some great tips to keep your home clean, organized and feeling fresh!

Start with a clean slate

One of the best things you can do when thinking ways to keep your home cleaner is to start with a clean slate. This means going through cupboards, cabinets and drawers and removing items you either never use, or don't use on a daily basis. In more functional rooms like kitchens, laundry rooms and bathrooms, this can be a great help in getting the room back to its original wonders!

Take this kitchen as an example. With the light colour scheme and fabulous horizontal lines to work with, removing everything from the countertops and keeping the sink clear of dishes and leftovers makes a world of difference. Use kitchen organisation systems in all of your drawers so everything, large or small, can have its own place – keeping your worktops and countertops clear for preparing meals or entertaining guests.

Keep necessities in reach and allow for natural light

Ever walk into a hotel bathroom and feel so relieved and happy that there's bright light and everything is in its place? Use this technique in your own bathroom by cleaning up after every use.  We have a list of a few things you can do, each time, to make a big difference:

Lay or roll up towels for either yourself or special guests

Keep windows open to release moisture and let in fresh air

Wipe down sinks and toilets after use – as well as faucets so there's a clean touch every time

Use a bath mat to wipe down leftover water on the floor

Clean the bathroom mirror on a weekly basis – sometimes there's nothing worse than a dirty bathroom mirror!

Use storage systems to put everything in its place

Storage systems and closet systems are one of the easiest way to use space and put everything in order.  Now, two downsides to this situation is the amount it could cost you depending on what you're looking for, and if you choose to install them yourself it can be rather confusing and time consuming.

However, now you're in luck, as there are plenty of local designers and larger stores like IKEA that know the necessity of such systems, and they can provide you with great systems for any budget or experience level.

If you're willing to make it into a DIY project, that's great – just make sure that you buy double the amount of wood you might need to be on the safe side.

Always put throws, blankets and pillows back in their place

Some of the easier tasks you can do to make your rooms, or living room and bedroom, seem cleaner are to take a few seconds to fold blankets and throws, to puff up pillows and put them back in their place.

Ideally, you should make a habit out of putting things back in their place upon use, which will make the entirety of your home more organised and clean. This should include taking dishes right back to the kitchen after you're done eating, and putting textiles back in their place!

This living room corner looks great with the pillows placed in order from smallest to largest and with the dramatic curtains drawn – it's the small things that count.

Use creative shelving

One of our new favourite trends is creative shelving, whether it be for books, or for storage. If you try to use your shelving as a creative and decorative feature in your home, you'll feel more inspired to use them in an appropriate way.

Use books and items in your home as a decorative feature, and try colour-coordination or wallpaper for a great, artistic backing to your newest shelving system! Placing books and unique items back in their place after use can keep your home clutter-free and add a visual dimension to almost any room.

White will inspire you to clean more!

White is typically avoided with carpeting, rugs, flooring and furnishings because of its ability to show stains.  However, this just might be the colour you need to stay up on stains and cleaning. It might seem like you're asking for trouble here, but we guarantee you will be a more careful homeowner if you are a bit it more daring and choose white.

Also, white is always a good colour to work with, and stains and messes shouldn't be a deterrent for anything in life! Take a look at this mostly-white living room and how having all the small furnishings and accessories in their place makes it feel instantly clean.
