Bigger is better? Not in our world!

We love stepping through the doors of a palatial manor house as much as the next person, but nothing beats a small and cosy family abode when it comes to creating a home of your own.

Small houses used to be seen as a sign of low status, a last resort for people without money. Not anymore! As the minimal living movement gains traction, a whole generation are ditching dreams of celebrity style cribs in favour of a simpler, more wholesome way of life. So stop lusting after mansions, and start saving for your own tiny home. We've got all the inspiration you need right here…

Neat and sweet

This well-proportioned South Korean home sits neatly on a generous plot. Everything that a modern family home requires is contained within – bedrooms, bathrooms, a large living space and a sleek kitchen.

The wooden accents on the facade add interest to the predominately white abode, and the change in levels subtly mark it out as the work of a superior architect.

Wooden wonder

A traditional twist

The Bazeley Partnership

This compact Devonshire home draws on the finer points of traditional British architecture, but loses the fuss and the frills along the way.

Instead of ornate sills and bay windows, the architects played around with a mixture of materials to add character to the facade of this tiny home – slate, brick and stone never looked so good together!

Monochrome majesty

A steep black gable roof dominates this contemporary cottage. Though it looks small from the outside, a step inside this Polish home reveals vast living spaces, large bedrooms, and a warm, inviting minimal design that is totally livable.

Where does one start when looking at this strawberry milkshake beauty? 1950's Hollywood style design is brought firmly into the present with the addition of a two storey glass window and an abstract white pergola

Metal and stucco combine to make an inviting yet impenetrable premises – this house wouldn't look out of place in a gated Beverly Hills community.

Following on from the fruity theme, this peachy-keen house is painted a beguiling shade of pale orange – perfect for a sunny climate.

The striking modern architecture is impressive in its own right, but what we really love is that the architects placed so much emphasis on developing an outstanding porch and patio. When space is limited, these luxurious extras are often forgotten about, but here they are combined into the very essence of the house to create an ideal outdoor living space.

Raise the roof

This diminutive house is idyllic for so many reasons, but its inclusion on this list is mainly down to one thing – that gorgeous, glossy roof. Underneath is hidden a wealth of interior design inspiration, but the steeply sloping slates are what makes this house truly iconic.

Unexpected angles

This small family house is one of the few dwellings on this list that doesn't subscribe to a modern aesthetic. With roots embedded deeply in the past, this colonial-style mini villa by Murat Kaya Architecture uses a mix of roof heights and traditional wooden panelling to create a look that is truly unique.

Smaller than it seems

This dark Japanese home manages to look imposing despite its small size! A combination of wood and slate adds texture to the muted exterior, while the pent roof elevates the home from average to AMAZING.

Despite the ebony exterior, this house is actually flooded with light. An abundance of large windows on both sides opens the home up to the rising and setting sun, and the built-in balcony allows the inhabitants to stand and watch the stars when the weather is good enough.

Fairy forest

Closing this article is another forest find, although this one is a bit more Brothers Grimm than the rest! Peeking out from between the trees, this fairytale cottage has just enough room for a family or group of friends to sequester themselves away. With a home like this, why would you ever leave?
