DIY projects are always inspiration, and the sense of fulfillment they create as an end result is always a great feeling!  DIY projects can be meditative and relaxing when done alone, or can be incredibly fun as a group project or girls' night.

DIY projects are perfect for weekends or holidays where you have time to finally do the things you always want to. Here at homify, we love DIY and enjoy letting the designer inside us come to the forefront. That's why we've dreamed up these eight fabulous projects that can both be completed in one weekend and change the entire feel of your home!

Make your own garden ornaments

It's hard to think about the concept of adding decor to your garden – aren't the flowers beautiful enough? Well, most of the time they are, but exterior furnishings and decor are wonderful additions in the warmer months.

This garden has been topped off with mirrors in extravagant antique frames – and we love it! Not only is this a cheap project that requires minimal construction, but both mirrors and gold-leafed-frames like these can be easily spotted at antique stores and local flea markets. For an added DIY project, grab some spray paint and change the colours as often as you like.

Origami

Origami is an ancient art for several reasons. It's beautiful, it's relaxing and with some precision and focus it can even be beautifully created by children and adults alike.  Origami as an art form is based in minimalism and uses the essential materials of life to create a wonderful art form.  Origami paper is cheap and comes in various colours, textures and patterns.

Why not start an origami project and create some garlands, as seen here? If you have a home that's more modern, Scandinavian, Asian or minimalist, an origami garland can look great anywhere. However, they are particularly interesting in nurseries and children's rooms – and why not use it for party decor?

Make string postcard hangers

Postcards are a great way to decorate your home. Throughout your travels abroad and even locally, postcards can be cool and kitschy items to collect. Not only do the visuals represent certain times in your life, but adding a little personal note on the back is another way to keep them organized and categorised.

Nowadays there are so many ways to display pictures, art and postcards – but we urge you try making your very own string postcard hangers.  Grab thicker, more colourful string for a super-fun look and either punch small holes in the postcards, or put them in individual plastic holders in order to avoid punching holes in them. Easy and speedy art – amazing!

Decorate boxes for tea, coffee, vegetables…

Storing foods and baking spices can seem pointless because of the need for more functional items. In a typical home, tea, coffee, fruits and vegetables tend to be stored out in the open for easy access and cleanliness – why not find a way to make these containers more aesthetically pleasing?

Whether it's staining mason jars, using chalkboard labels and chalk to properly label, or going to your local DIY pottery shop to paint and glaze your own and fitting them with metallic tops (as pictured here), we suggest you keep your options open and have fun.

Sew some pillows

If you never got a change to learn how to sew – that's OK. Sewing pillows can be one of the easiest things you can possible learn how to do! Get creative by choosing some fun patterned or textured fabric, and trim them to any shape you wish your pillows to be. Of course, we suggest you choose a square-shape as this will be the easiest to complete.

Turn the fabric inside-out and sew – when one edge is left, either stuff with a cotton pillow, or a down-stuffed lining.

Make a bed fort

You've probably seen bed forts all over Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and various other interior design magazine and websites.  They are definitely a trend of the moment, but a trend that we hope is here to stay!

Simply grab a few meters of any fabric of your choice, and four wooden poles, preferably one, or two, meters in height. Wrap the fabric around the poles, holding them in place and wait until after you have it positioned before you decide to cut a hole for the door. The top should have no fabric – and to top it off, use some cute string, rope or twine to tie the poles together.

Tip: Why not use addition tea lights for an added cuteness for a child's room or nursery?

Frame wrapping paper

Sometimes we find that we have extravagant and vintage-looking frames laying around with no proper use. Forget the art work or expensive printing fees! Why not grab some of the best wrapping paper you can find (or, even wallpaper!) and use an eclectic mix of frames to bring a Bohemian-chic look to your home?

For a cool eclectic look, grab some matte paint and use a great colour scheme to paint them all different colours.

Paint patterns on your furniture

Matte, glossy, semi-glass, antique, chalk – these are all the wonderful options you have when it comes to paint choices for your walls and furnishings.

Think twice before dumping old and especially antique furnishings – grab a great, bold colour of paint and bring in new life to that drab old table or chair.  The photograph here is a perfect example of how a simple coat of bold blue paint can change a telephone table from old and antiquarian to cool and chic!
